The birth of Catholicism in Goa

If you are interested in the above subject Google Wikipedia: Goan Catholics, below is an excerpt. Main article: History of Goan Catholics Pre-Portuguese era [ edit ] It was believed until recently that there was no concrete evidence that Christianity prevailed in Goa before the Portuguese arrived, but it was believed that St. Bartholomew , one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, brought the Gospel and spread it in Konkan , including Goa, just as St. Thomas had done in Kerala and Tamil Nadu , in Southern India . [23] However, the work of the historian Jose Cosme Costa, Apostolic Christianity in Goa and in the West Coast (Pilar, Goa: Xavierian Publication Society, 2009), makes a case for the existence of Christianity in Goa before the arrival of the Portuguese. He speaks of Goa as a trading centre with the Middle East and with Rome). He suggests that the Apostle Thomas might have made his way over land from northern India to Kerala. He also examines the evidence of the ...

A piece of colonial Kenyan history: NFD sliced from Somalia

I have no idea how I came by this, or who the author is. However, I am grateful to the source and the author. K ENYA COLONY, or, as it used to be called, British East Africa, is a tropical possession of the British Empire situated right on the Equator. Topographically it may be divided into three main sections. The northernmost of these, consisting largely of desert and unproductive soil, may be ignored for the purposes of this discussion; the value of the Colony both actual and prospective lies in the south between the island of Mombassa on the Indian Ocean and the shores of Lake Victoria Nyanza. The second main section consists of the actual sea coast (including Mombassa) and its immediate hinterland. As we go westward from the coast we pass through this low lying belt into the third section, which gradually rises until it becomes a high tableland at an average elevation of some 5,000 feet. It falls again to the shores of the great lake, though by no means to sea level. Nairobi, ...

Cyprian Fernandes: The Maciel legacy to Goan and Kenya history

A Kenyan “Giver’s” trove of memory Bwana Karani and From Mtoto to Mzee By Mervyn Maciel A review by Cyprian Fernandes At the heart of Lois Lowry’s superb futuristic children’s novel are two central characters: the Receiver and the Giver. They have lived in a community where there is no war, suffering, colour, sex, music or love. There is no greed, gluttony or any of the seven deadly sins. This is the ultimate sanitised society. One boy is nominated every few generations or so to receive the community’s collective memory from the aging Giver who know just about everything there is to know about all the wars, genocide, crimes including murder, everything that wrong and everything that right about a world that virtually destroyed the planet. The Giver is the sole archive, the memory banks, and he has instant recall. My friend Tony Reg D’Souza, a former teacher among other things, is somewhat of a “giver”, in the sense that his memory of Goan history in East Africa, especi...

Nairobi: breathing new life into memories of Eastleigh/town schools

St Teresa’s, Catholic Parochial School Reunion 2015 'The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.', 'It is very risky.’– Outstanding children’s author Lois Lowry. I would add the sharing breathes life into a memory and keeps the flame alive. The St Teresa’s and CPS ex-students in the UK and elsewhere do a bloody good job of the keeping that sacred flame of our Kenyan childhoods alive and burning brightly. The reunions to date have done exactly that and it was no different on July 19, 2015 in Croydon UK. At the very outset allow me, with infinite humility and pride, to thank everyone who shared in some way or a very large way in making possible the celebration. I am even more humbled by the way old friends welcomed me and together we trundled again down the streets of Eastleigh and those classrooms that filled us with a whole gamut of emotions, sometimes pain, sometimes joy, always plenty of laug...
