Vera aka Brenda Bleythn says farewell

Vera aka Brenda Blyehn says farewell I am a TV junkie, especially British TV and even more so about Vera. She drove that old, old landrover which had seen better days. She the crusty boss who cracked the whip with her team but was soft enough to provide a shoulder for anyone in her team. Yet, when everyone in the team was floundering, the case seeming uncrackable, it was she who would unearth a critical clue at the 12th hour and help her team solve the case. ITV bosses have confirmed Brenda will appear "in two more shows next year before it reaches a dramatic conclusion", according to the Sun newspaper. For every single one of her fans this is a shot to each heart. Vera was quite unique and not your average crime investigator. She will be missed. According to the Sun, Brenda has spoken out for the first time about how "hard" she will find walking away from her role as DCI Vera Stanhope. She wrote on X: "Many thanks to everyone for your good wishes. So very muc...

How can Britain have influence abroad when it is broken at home?

Thanks Trevor! Ravaged by austerity, chastened by Brexit: how can Britain have influence abroad when it’s broken at home? Nesrine Malik Our shabby domestic reality is a far cry from the imperial grandeur of the Foreign Office. Politicians must recognise this Mon 22 Apr 2024 THE GUARDIAN   D eciding on what the UK’s place in the world should be has been like watching politicians spin a wheel. Then spinning it again when the option they landed on doesn’t work out. First, it was the imperial power projections of  Brexit , the reassertion of Britain’s place in the world unshackled by the limitations of equal partnership with Europe. You don’t hear so much about this any more (funny that). Instead, we now find ourselves in an era chastened by the embarrassing bombast of the past few years, but still trying to work out where we “fit”, what our role is, in a world where the country’s status has taken a beating. Earlier this month,  former diplomats proposed  that the ...

Alliance, St Mary's, Kenya High, Prince of Wales

Alliance High School In the early days of the colonial era in Kenya, the colonialists believed that Africans should not be allowed an education beyond the basic level as they would not benefit from any higher education. The rationale was that Africans were only useful as a source of cheap labour. Missionaries who had been arriving in the country from the beginning of the 20th century strongly opposed this idea. During the 1920s, Jomo Kenyatta, who was in England at the time, urged Kikuyu parents to send their children to "Mission" schools. He made the point in several editions of the Kikuyu newspaper "Mwigithania" which he edited. He had clearly understood the value of a good modern education. His stay in England convinced him of that. He told anyone who would listen: "We will need well-educated people for when we get Uhuru." When Uhuru did come, plane loads of Kenyas went mainly to the US colleges but also to the UK.  I reckon the greatest gift that B...
