Here is the photo of the 1st GOA women's team in 1973 -
thanks to Shirley Fernandes (Edwin Fernandes' wife- Dar). The Ugandan and
Kenyan national players combined to form a strong team that beat the
Canadian and American champions! Many of us played for Ontario, and we were
then recruited for the Canadian Trials, however, we had to relocate to
Vancouver. As new immigrants, this was an impossibility.
The Ugandan and Kenyan players combined to form a strong team that beat the reigning Canadian and American teams.
We played all over North America and Bermuda, it was a great team! Zulema was the captain, and Astrid was the vice captain. We had a secret weapon- we talked Swahili, which completely frustrated the opposing teams!
